Submission Guidelines

Welcome to the Submission Guidelines for the Eleventh Annual DVC Literary contest, Spring 2022. Entries will be accepted November 15, 2021 through February 28, 2022.


Open to currently enrolled Diablo Valley College students only. This means any student enrolled in courses in Fall 2021 and/or Spring 2022.


Please read through the list below before submitting. Entries that do not follow guidelines will be disqualified.

  • There are three categories: Fiction/Short Play, Creative Nonfiction, and Poetry.
  • You may enter into all categories but may only enter once in each.
  • All work is judged blindly. Do not include your name or any identifying information on your submission.
  • Follow guidelines provided for each genre. Entries that do not follow guidelines are subject to disqualification.
  • Prizes may be awarded dependent on funds. The prizes are First Place $75, Second Place $50, Third Place $25 in each category.
  • Winners will be notified by email through this site.
  • All winners will be invited to the student reading held on campus in the Diablo Room, TBD.
  • All winners may be published in DVC's second issue of It's Lit, online literary journal. More details to come. 
  • Due to the number of submissions as well as time constraints, we will be unable to provide editing notes.



  1. Your piece should be no longer than 2000 words.
  2. Your essay may be creative nonfiction (narrative essay, flash nonfiction, memoir, or autobiography) but it needs to be nonfiction and a stand-alone piece.
  3. Your attachment should be .doc or docx files.
  4. Format your attachment double-spaced, Times New Roman or other font, regular font (not bolded throughout, for instance), one inch margins all around, pages numbered.
  5. There should be no name or identifying information on your story.
  6. Include all requested information, including entire address, email address, Student ID, and phone number. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.



  1. You may submit up to three poems but no more than six pages. 
  2. Put all poems into one document, a poem a page.
  3. Your attachment should be .doc or .docx files.
  4. Poems should be 1.5 spaced. Times New Roman or other 12 font, regular font (not bolded throughout, for instance), one inch margins all around, pages numbered.
  5. Title poems or indicate "untitled."
  6. Do not add any identifying information on your pages.
  7. Include all requested information, including entire address, email address, student ID, and phone number. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.



  1. Fiction/dramatic submissions should be no longer than 2000 words.
  2. You may submit a short story/short play or an excerpt from a longer piece, but the longer piece should stand alone. 
  3. Your attachment should be .doc or .docx files.
  4. Format your attachment double-spaced, Times New Roman or other 12 font, regular font (not bolded throughout, for instance), one inch margins all around, pages numbered.
  5. There should be no name or identifying information on your pieces.
  6. Include all requested information, including entire address, email address, student ID, and phone number. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
